Workshop Manager (Truck)
1. Education and Qualifications
Trade Certificate: Qualified Diesel Mechanic/Artisan with a Red Seal Trade Certificate (compulsory).
Education: Matric/Grade 12.
Licensing: Valid Code 14 Driver’s License with a Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
Advantageous: A Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Business Management
2. Experience Requirements
Technical Experience: Minimum 5–10 years of experience in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance (trucks, trailers, or earthmoving equipment).
Management Experience: Minimum 3–5 years in a supervisory or management role (e.g., Workshop Foreman, Manager).
Brand Expertise: Familiarity with major commercial brands such as Isuzu, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, or MAN is frequently required.
System Knowledge: Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
3. Key Performance Areas (Responsibilities)
Workshop Operations: Overseeing daily activities, including scheduling, prioritizing repairs, etc.
Staff Management: Supervising mechanics, apprentices, and admin personnel, including training, performance reviews, and health & safety compliance.
Financial Control: Managing workshop budgets, controlling costs (parts, labour), and monitoring profitability.
Quality & Compliance: Ensuring compliance with Road Traffic Act, OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act), and MIB (Motor Importer/Builder) regulations.
Inventory Management: Managing stock levels of parts and equipment.
4. Key Competencies and Skills
Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, auto-electrical systems, and transmissions.
Proficient with Diagnostic Equipment
Leadership: Ability to lead a team under pressure and foster a high-performance culture.
Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with drivers, management, and clients.
Computer Literacy: Proficient in MS Office (Excel).
