Job Summary
We are looking for a dedicated and experienced medical professional to lead our on-site health and medical services for our opencast operations. The ideal candidate must be a qualified Medical Practitioner with a post -graduate qualification in Occupational Medicine and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). This individual will handle end-to-end duties for the Occupational Health department, establishing and managing the full occupational medical surveillance program while ensuring strict compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA). This role reports directly to the Mine Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Health Promotion: Drive wellness programs and health campaigns focusing on chronic disease management , fatigue mitigation, and mental wellness in the workplace.
- Injury & Disease Management: Manage the reporting, treatment, and rehabilitation of occupational injuries and diseases, including the submission of COIDA claims where applicable.
- Risk Assessment & Management: Collaborate with the Occupational Hygiene and Safety teams to conduct regular workplace risk assessment, linking environmental stressors directly to health surveillance strategies.
- Fitness for Duty: Assess and issue Certificates of Fitness for employees and contractors, ensuring all personnel are physically and mentally capable of performing their specific duties safely.
- Medical Surveillance: Design, implement, and oversee a comprehensive medical surveillance program (initial, periodical, and exit medical examinations) tailored to opencast mining hazards, such dust, noise, fatigue, and environmental exposures.
- Statutory Compliance: Act as a legally appointed Occupational Medical Practitioner (OMP) for the Mine, ensuring full compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996)
REQUIREMENTS
- Education: A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or MBBCh)
- Postgraduate Qualification: A specialised postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health/Medicine recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- Professional Registration: Active, valid registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
- MHSA Compliance Knowledge: Deep operational knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act to draft and enforce mandatory Codes of Practice (COPs) specifically regarding minimum standards of fitness to perform work at a Mine and management of medical incapacity due to ill-health and injury.
- Align employee’s physical/mental health with the inherent job requirements of a surface operation.
- Reporting and record-keeping, e.g., 40 year rule – ensuring all medical surveillance records are archived securely and kept confidential for at least 40 years.
- Annual medical report compilation and submission to the Principal Inspector of Mines and Department of Mineral Resources and Energy before the end of February each year and including completing and submitting formal statutory reports within 30 days of diagnosing an occupational disease.
