Dean: Faculty of Military Science Jobs in Stellenbosch at Stellenbosch University

Duties/Pligte

The Dean assumes overarching responsibility for:
  • Providing strategic academic leadership of the Faculty of Military Science across learning and teaching, research, innovation,

internationalisation and social impact, in alignment with the University’s institutional strategy.

  • Serving as the academic head of the Faculty and providing academic leadership of the Military Academy within a joint SU-DoD governance

framework.

  • Ensuring the academic integrity, quality assurance and accreditation of programmes offered within a military education context, and

alignment with relevant defence education, security cluster and training requirements.

  • Leading and managing the Faculty’s academic, administrative and support structures, including providing leadership and management with

regard to all staff and student matters within a complex, multi-employer and security-regulated environment.

  • Managing the Faculty’s financial resources, infrastructure and facilities responsibly and strategically, including full oversight of financial

management and resource stewardship.

  • Promoting research excellence, research translation, the unlocking of research funding opportunities, and the establishment of externally

funded Chairs, while strengthening research capacity and supporting the recruitment and retention of academic talent.

  • Promoting interdisciplinary excellence and transdisciplinary collaboration with other faculties, schools and research entities within the

University.

  • Taking initiative for and managing marketing, student recruitment and fundraising activities in support of the Faculty’s strategic objectives.
  • Engaging with senior stakeholders within Stellenbosch University and the Department of Defence, and liaising externally to establish and

maintain multi-level partnerships and collaborations nationally and internationally.

  • Driving transformation, diversity, equity and inclusion within the Faculty, in line with institutional priorities.
  • Ensuring sound governance, compliance and risk management, including responsible operation within a security-regulated environment

and adherence to applicable University and Defence frameworks.

  • Sharing responsibility for the leadership and management of the University as a whole, as a member of the broader institutional leadership

community.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Eligibility for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor in a discipline relevant to the Faculty of Military Science or a closely

related field, reflecting recognised academic standing.

  • Five to ten years’ proven senior academic leadership and management experience at Faculty and/or institutional level within a higher

education institution or similarly complex environment, including defence and/or national security experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively within complex governance and multi-stakeholder environments, including joint or

partnership-based arrangements.

  • Sound knowledge of the higher education sector, including academic leadership, research funding, quality assurance, institutional

governance and the broader research funding landscape.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with senior stakeholders across University, public sector and defence-related environments, and

to establish and maintain partnerships and collaborative networks at national and/or international level.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage with external stakeholders in support of the Faculty’s strategic objectives, including marketing, student

recruitment and fundraising where applicable.

  • Evidence of ethical, innovative, compassionate, inclusive and values-driven leadership, with sound interpersonal, communication and

liaison skills.

  • Eligibility to meet applicable statutory, institutional and security-related requirements relevant to the Faculty of Military Science and the

Military Academy environment.

  • The ability to function effectively within a multilingual and multicultural environment, in accordance with the University’s language policy.
  • Eligibility to obtain the required security clearance, which includes compliance with applicable citizenship requirements in accordance with

the Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS) of 1996.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Experience in leading academic entities within joint governance frameworks or inter-institutional partnerships.
  • Experience engaging with Defence, public sector or security-related institutions, or comparable state entities.
  • Experience managing academic programmes, staff and resources within regulated or security-sensitive contexts.
  • Experience with developments in Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) as applicable to the Department of Defence context.

As part of the interview process, provisionally shortlisted candidates will be expected to deliver a short presentation to the Senior Appointments Committee.
The topic of the presentation will be shared with the provisionally shortlisted candidates. Applicants on the final shortlist will be required to present to a joint meeting of the Faculty board and Institutional Forum.

Term of Office:
The appointment is for a five (5) year fixed-term with the possibility of reappointment for a further term. A fallback option to the successful candidate’s academic department exists.

The appointment will be subject to the relevant statutory, institutional and inter-institutional approvals applicable to the Faculty of Military Science in terms of the governing agreements between Stellenbosch University and the Department of Defence.
