Truck Mechanic Job Description

Working Hours
- Monday to Friday: 08:00 – 17:00
- Saturdays: 08:00 – 13:00
Job Summary
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Truck Mechanic to join our fleet maintenance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for servicing and maintaining company trucks, carrying out minor repairs, performing daily vehicle inspections, attending local breakdown call outs, and coordinating long-distance breakdown assistance. The role requires strong mechanical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently to ensure all vehicles remain roadworthy and operational.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Repairs
- Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance on trucks and trailers.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs including: o Clutch replacements o Brake pad and brake system repairs o Suspension and steering repairs o Electrical fault finding o Minor engine and gearbox repairs
- Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out repairs efficiently.
- Repair and maintain hydraulic tail lifts and related systems.
- Ensure all repairs are completed safely and according to company standards.
Daily Vehicle Inspections
- Conduct daily inspections on trucks before departure.
- Identify and resolve defects or safety concerns before vehicles leave the premises.
- Ensure vehicles comply with roadworthy and safety requirements.
- Maintain inspection checklists and service records.
Breakdown & Call-Out Support
- Attend local breakdown call-outs and perform on-site repairs where possible.
- Coordinate and manage long-distance breakdowns and external repair providers.
- Communicate effectively with drivers and management regarding vehicle issues and downtime.
Workshop & Safety
- Maintain a clean and organized workshop environment.
- Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained.
- Follow all health and safety regulations and company procedures.
- Assist with stock control of spare parts and workshop consumables.
Minimum Requirements
- Proven experience as a truck or diesel mechanic.
- Strong knowledge of truck servicing and maintenance procedures.
- Experience repairing clutches, brakes, and hydraulic tail lifts.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults.
- Valid driver’s license (Code 10/14 advantageous).
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diesel mechanic qualification or trade certificate.
- Experience working with fleet vehicles and commercial trucks.
- Basic welding and fabrication skills advantageous.
- Knowledge of roadside breakdown procedures.
