Job Overview
The Solid Hardwood Furniture Machinist is responsible for crafting high-quality furniture parts from solid hardwood. This role requires hands-on experience with woodworking machinery, precision measuring, and finishing techniques to produce durable and aesthetically appealing furniture. The machinist ensures that all products meet design specifications and company quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret drawings and specifications.
- Operate woodworking machinery safely and efficiently.
- Measure, cut, shape, and assemble solid hardwood components.
- Perform quality checks at every stage of production.
- Maintain machinery and workshop tools in proper working condition.
- Collaborate with design and production teams to meet deadlines.
- Follow all safety protocols and ensure a clean, organised workspace.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Proven experience as a furniture machinist or woodworker.
- Strong knowledge of solid hardwood types (e.g., oak, walnut, cherry).
- Ability to work with precision and attention to detail.
- Familiarity woodworking machinery
- Physical stamina and ability to handle heavy materials.
Types of Machines Commonly Used
- Table Saw – for ripping, crosscutting, and sizing hardwood.
- Band Saw – for curved cuts and irregular shapes.
- Planer / Thicknesser – to smooth and set uniform thickness.
- Jointer – to flatten and square edges.
- Router / CNC Router – for shaping, detailing, and joinery.
- Drill Press – for precise drilling of holes.
- Lathe – for turning wood into cylindrical shapes (legs, spindles).
- Mortiser – for cutting square or rectangular holes for joints.
- Shaper – for creating profiles and moldings.
- Dust Extraction Systems – for safety and workshop cleanliness.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in woodworking or furniture manufacturing.
- Knowledge of wood moisture content and treatment.
- Understanding of ergonomic and safety best practices.
Work Environment
- Workshop or factory environment.
- Exposure to dust, noise, and machinery.
- Strict adherence to safety protocols required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: R7 000,00 – R7 560,00 per month
