Purpose of the Role

To lead and manage all roll shop shift operations including roll grinding, roll building, and associated maintenance ensuring safety, quality, and production targets are consistently met.


The core responsibilities of the position include:

  • Lead, coordinate, and manage shift resources to optimise plant performance within safety, quality, and operational standards.
  • Oversee roll grinding, roll building, and maintenance activities to ensure roll availability and mill readiness.
  • Drive compliance with SHE standards, housekeeping, and established procedures.
  • Conduct process-related fault finding and facilitate problem-solving to resolution.
  • Manage team performance, training, development, employee relations, and discipline.
  • Produce accurate shift performance reports and fulfil administrative duties.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve departmental effectiveness.

The core requirements and competencies for the position include:

  • Matric or equivalent qualifications.
  • Recognised apprenticeship with a mechanical trade test.
  • N5 or higher technical qualification (advantageous).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably at supervisory level.

Technical Competencies:

  • Sound knowledge of roll grinding, roll building, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings.
  • Systematic fault finding on hydraulic and mechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of pumps, bearings, gearboxes, lifting equipment, and lubrication systems.
  • Understanding of high-precision equipment and basic electrical/control systems.
  • Knowledge of product quality and safety standards.

Leadership & Behavioural Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate a multi-disciplined team.
  • Strategic thinking with attention to detail.
  • Preparedness to work shifts and overtime.
