Purpose of the Job
The Service Desk Technician is responsible for providing first‑line technical support to end users. This includes troubleshooting hardware, software, network, and application issues, ensuring prompt resolution and excellent customer service to maintain smooth business operations.
Key Responsibilities
User Support & Incident Resolution
- Provide first‑line support via phone, email, ticketing system, and onsite assistance.
- Troubleshoot desktop, laptop, mobile device, and peripheral issues.
- Resolve problems related to Windows OS, Microsoft 365, business applications, and network access.
- Log, track, and manage incidents and service requests within SLA timeframes.
Hardware & Software Management
- Install, configure, and maintain computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
- Perform upgrades, patches, and routine system maintenance.
- Prepare and set up workstations for new employees.
User Account & Access Management
- Create, modify, and disable user accounts (Active Directory / Azure AD).
- Assist with permissions, password resets, and MFA support.
Systems, Networks & Security
- Support basic networking issues (WiFi, LAN, VPN).
- Ensure compliance with IT security standards and policies.
- Report security incidents or unusual system behaviour.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accurate documentation of configurations, procedures, and solutions.
- Contribute to the knowledge base for recurring issues.
- Recommend improvements to reduce incident frequency.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric (Grade 12).
- IT‑related qualification (A+, N+, MCSE, relevant diploma, or equivalent).
- 2+ years’ experience in an IT Service Desk or technical support role.
Skills Requirements
- Strong communication skills to assist users effectively across phone, email, and ticketing platforms.
- Proven troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve desktop, laptop, and mobile device issues.
- Solid data administration skills to manage incidents, service requests, and documentation accurately.
- Effective problem-solving skills to address Windows OS, Microsoft 365, and application-related challenges.
- Practical technical skills to install, configure, and maintain hardware, software, and peripherals.
- Reliable organisational skills to prioritise tasks and meet SLA deadlines.
- Adaptable teamwork skills to collaborate with IT colleagues and support business operations.
- Attention to detail to ensure compliance with IT security standards and policies.
