JOB TITLE: Service Department Specialist
Purpose of the Role
To manage and coordinate all service departments within the store, including butchery, bakery, deli, and kitchen, ensuring profitability, operational efficiency, stock control, customer satisfaction, and compliance with food safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
– Oversee daily operations of butchery, bakery, deli, and kitchen departments
– Lead and support department controllers to achieve sales and operational targets
– Monitor department sales, gross profit, wastage, and shrinkage
– Ensure correct stock ordering, stock rotation, and product availability (production planning)
– Maintain high standards of product quality, freshness, and presentation
– Manage labour productivity and staffing efficiency across departments
– Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and health regulations
– Drive promotions, seasonal planning, and department growth initiatives
– Investigate and resolve operational challenges affecting service departments
– Conduct regular department inspections and performance reviews
– Report department performance and action plans to store management
Minimum Requirements
– Grade 12 / Matric
– Relevant retail or food service management experience
– Minimum 3–5 years supervisory or management experience in fresh food/service departments
– Strong understanding of stock control, waste management, and gross profit
– Knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards
– Computer literacy and reporting skills
