Vacancy: SENIOR SAFETY OFFICER

Location: SURFACE EXPLORATION DRILLING PROJECTS AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN AND AROUND LIMPOPO 

Educational Qualifications and Work Experience 

·       Grade 12 Certificate

·       National Diploma or Degree in Occupational/ Mine Health and Safety, Engineering, or related technical discipline (NQF Level 6 or higher) 

·       Comsoc 1&2 and SAMTRAC or equivalent. 

·       Incident investigation

·       Risk Assessment Training

·       Minimum 3 years’ experience in SHE management system within a mining, drilling, and OHS environment.

·       Valid driver's license (EB)

Knowledge or experience in:

·       ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems or equivalent.

·       Internal safety audits

·       Safety reporting systems and compliance monitoring

·       Must be computer proficient at a higher level (Microsoft Suite)

Experience or exposure in:

·       Mining Operations (regulated under the Mine Health and Safety Act)

·       Drilling Operations environment will be an advantage

·       Workshops and Stores (regulated under the Occupational Health and Safety Act)

Duties 

Operational Safety Oversight 

·       Provide safety oversight across surface and or geotechnical drilling operations including areas outside mining rights.

·       Ensure all operations comply with applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation.

·       Support operational teams in maintaining safe work practices and compliance with company and client safety standards.

Legal Compliance

·       Ensure compliance with relevant mining and occupational health and safety legislation.

·       Monitor and maintain legal appointments for operational areas.

·       Ensure all required statutory inspections and safety processes are conducted

Risk Management

·       Facilitate and support the implementation of Risk Management Programs to mitigate risk of operations.

·       Ensure baseline and issue-based risk assessments are relevant to the project and up to date.

·       Ensure continuous risk assessment programs are implemented and maintained.

Safety Inspections and Audits

·       Oversee and verify safety inspections across all operations

·       Monitor action register to ensure closeouts are completed.

·       Do inspections to verify compliance.

Incident Investigation and Reporting

·       Ensure all incidents are reported in accordance with company and client requirements.

·       Lead incident investigations to identify root causes, ensure key learnings are captured and communicated, and monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Communication and Awareness

·       Promote safety awareness campaigns and safety programmes across operational support areas.

·       Ensure safety instructions and updates are communicated to employees.

·       Facilitate safety engagements.

·       Regular engagements with client counterpart

Safety Training Support

·       Assist with identifying safety training needs within operational teams.

·       Support safety training and awareness programmes.

·       Monitor training compliance against the training matrix.

Safety Reporting

·       Compile and review safety reports and statistics for operational support environments.

·       Ensure that hazard reporting—covering both leading and lagging indicators—is consistently conducted across all levels of the organisation.

·       Support the Safety Manager in analysing safety trends and reporting performance indicators.

·       Support the contract manager in all matters pertaining to safety.

Project Safety

·       Support the safe execution of projects

·       Verify safety requirements are implemented before project work commences.

Leadership and Team Development

·       Provide guidance and coaching to safety officers and operational teams.

·       Promote a positive safety culture within operational support environments.

·       Encourage proactive hazard identification and risk management.
