The Wits School of Arts (WSOA) invites applications for a permanent appointment at the level of Senior Lecturer in the Fine Arts Division. The successful candidate will join a dynamic interdisciplinary environment comprising Fine Arts, Curatorial Practice and Visual Cultures, Theatre and Performance, Music, Film and Television, Digital Arts, Drama for Life, and Cultural Policy and Management.
We seek an artist-scholar of national or international standing, with a strong academic and creative profile, committed to advancing critical, innovative, and socially engaged art practices in South Africa and beyond.
Minimum Requirements
• PhD in Fine Art or a closely related field (mandatory for Senior Lecturer level).
• Demonstrated teaching excellence and curriculum development experience in Fine Arts or related field.
• A substantial research or creative practice profile, including peer-reviewed publications and/or exhibitions of national/international significance.
• Proven postgraduate supervision experience (Honours, Master’s, and PhD).
• Evidence of at least 3 years of academic leadership and management experience, with readiness to assume a senior leadership role in the department.
• Expertise in areas relevant to contemporary art practices, research and discourses, particularly within African and global contexts.
• Applicants with professional and teaching experience in art practices, including painting, print making, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, digital media/new media, performance art or curatorial practice are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
• Provide academic leadership within the Fine Arts Department and WSOA
• Teach and coordinate courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Supervise postgraduate students (Honours, MA, PhD).
• Contribute to curriculum development and transformation initiatives.
• Maintain an active research and creative practice profile.
• Manage and develop the studio programme to professional standards.
• Engage in fundraising and partnership development for the Division.
• Participate in department and school committees and contribute to the broader intellectual life of Wits.
Remuneration
A competitive salary package with benefits will be offered, commensurate with qualifications and experience, in line with Wits University pay scales.
