Job Advert Summary
We are looking for a Sample Machinist. The individual would be responsible for constructing high-quality, pre-production prototypes from designers’ sketches and patterns. They will work with diverse fabrics (woven, knits, stretch) using various industrial sewing machines, collaborating with patternmakers to refine fit, construction methods, and production efficiency.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 preferable / equivalent skill level
- Previous experience in a similar role (previous experience in manufacturing, tailoring, or garment sample making in a garment development or sampling environment)
- Must be able to count (stock take & count and label cut parts).
- Deep knowledge of garment construction fabric types, and stitching and/or strong techniques sewing and assembly skills, including experience with various industrial sewing machines.
- High level of precision in cutting, sewing, and measuring
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Ability to read and interpret technical sketches and patterns and resolve construction challenges
- Willingness to abide by processes and rules.
- Maintain quality standards.
- Ability to work well independently and within a team.
- Observe and adhere to all safety rules
- Wear the required protective clothing required for cutting apparatus used.
- Must be able to communicate effectively: Communicating with Supervisors/ Peers/ Subordinates.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Sample Construction: Assemble complete garments (woven, knits, or specialized) from start to finish based on design instructions.
- Technical Interpretation: Interpret patterns, technical sketches, and tech packs to create accurate prototypes.
- Construction Advice: Identify and suggest efficient assembly methods to enhance production friendliness.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all samples adhere to quality standards and meet tight deadlines.
- Troubleshooting: Liaise with designers and patternmakers to solve technical difficulties, fitting issues, or pattern discrepancies.
- Finishing: Perform necessary trimming, finishing work, and light pressing.
- Machine Maintenance: Operate, maintain, and set up various industrial sewing machines
