Job Advert Summary
Feltex is seeking a Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Specialist to plan, lead, organise, control and manage the operational execution of the SHE function and processes nationally. The successful incumbent will be responsible for identifying and eliminating all potential risks in the workplace across all manufacturing and operational facilities, ensuring continuous improvement of SHE performance, and maintaining consistent implementation and monitoring of SHE systems.
This role plays a key part in supporting operational excellence by leading SHE operations, ensuring compliance with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and all applicable legal and internal requirements, and supporting continuous improvement efforts. As a key position within the department, it is designed to build and apply expertise in SHE management, risk control, and project support, while fostering a culture of safety and collaboration aligned with organisational objectives and national compliance requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12
- Bachelor’s degree and/or National Diploma in Safety Management
- ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Internal Auditor certification additional.
- SAMTRAC or equivalent safety certification additional.
- Environmental Health and Safety qualification additional.
- 3–5 years’ Experience in a SHE Specialist or similar role
- 3–5 years’ Experience within the manufacturing or automotive sectors advantageous.
Duties & Responsibilities
SHE Strategy
- Achieve the SHE Strategy and Operational Plan in accordance to set targets
SHE Legislation
- Ensure adherence to SHE legislation and other requirements (OHS Act and its Regulations, NEMA, Standards, Best Practices, etc.)
- Enforce plant compliance with established legal requirements.
- Enforce MHI and AEL licensing requirements at Plant level.
Policies and Procedures
- Develop, improve, update and maintain SHE Policies, Procedures, Protocols, Work Instructions, Codes of Practice, etc.
- Operate according to standard operating procedures and within the parameters of applicable legislation
SHE Management
- Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of a safety, risk, security, health and environmental management programme in the workplace
- Develop and implement Safe Working Practices and safe work procedures
- Continually monitor, measure and trend the plant performances to highlight and reduce risks and concerns
- Oversee Contractors providing SHE services
- Analyse plant SHE KPI’s and performance data and ensure delivery of defined targets.
- Monthly SHE reporting to Head Office.
- Ensure Plant Appointment Letters are available and up to date.
- Participate and lead Behavioural Safety Observations, Gemba walks
- Ensure Plant mandatory inspections are conducted and identified shortfalls are addressed.
- Participate in Plant Health and Safety Committee meetings.
- Develop Toolbox talks
SHE Management System
- Monitor and maintain the Plant SHE Management system
- Update and create monthly Group electronic or otherwise SHE reports
SHE Audits
- Be the Plant management representative for the ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 systems, certification audits and any other newly introduced management systems.
- Conduct, report and follow up on a pre-use, safety and/or audit inspection including Risk Control
- Analyse SHE Audit results and make recommendations and drive closure of findings
- Conduct internal SHE system audits.
Risk Management
- Manage the Risk Management program that is in-line with Business SHE requirements
- Facilitate action teams and improvement programs to continually improve upon identified risks
- Identify potential hazards and critical safety issues in the workplace
- Address workplace hazards and risks
Risk Assessments
- Address safety, health and environmental requirements and hazards in a technical context
- Provide input into plant risk assessments and aspect and impact assessments and update accordingly when there are any process or activity changes.
Health
- Co-ordinate all activities relating to Health implementation (Blood drives, eye clinics etc)
- Manage plant medical surveillance programs
- Co-ordinate occupational hygiene surveys and facilitate implementation of recommended outcomes.
- Establish medical surveillance programs
Emergencies
- Liaise with emergency authorities relating to site safety
- Monitor and control Emergency Equipment (Fire Extinguishers, Breathing Apparatus, spill kits, etc.)
- Respond to, implement and manage emergencies according to an emergency action plan
- Assist in properties management
Security Management
- Assume overall responsibility for the integrity of the Site Security System
- Conduct Security investigations and liaise with the local authorities as required
Continuous Improvement
- Identify, suggest and implement corrective actions to improve SHE within Feltex
Incident/Accident Investigations
- Lead incident/accident investigations into workplace incidents and use structured problem-solving tools (5-Why etc.)
- Make recommendations and manage the effective implementation of corrective and preventative actions
