Operations Yard Supervisor (JBH) Jobs in Johannesburg at Pepkor Logistics
JOB PURPOSE:
Coordination of all vehicle movements within the facility. Ensures operational efficiency by managing traffic flow, enforcing strict safety protocols, specifically during reversing and docking, and maintaining accurate digital records to support high-volume logistics throughput.
QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE:
● Grade 12
● Certificate in Road and Transport Management, Logistics Management or Related field of study (advantageous)
● Computer literate with Microsoft Office, particularly MS Outlook, Excel and Google Workspace
● Must have a valid driver’s licence
● Minimum 5 year working experience in a similar leadership position within a warehousing environment
● Previous experience in managing a team
● Experience in managing a Health and Safety programme according to the specifications stipulated by law (advantageous).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
TAT (Truck Turnaround Time):
● Minimising Truck Turnaround Time
● Adherence to Loading & offloading Times
Movement Control:
● Directing trucks, trailers, and any other vehicle in and out of the yard, this includes drivers leaving for lunch / workshop etc.
● Designate specific areas for vehicle staging, parking, and empty trailer Zones.
● Reporting shunter movements to transport SP
Yard Maintenance:
● Maintaining high standards of housekeeping within the yard
● Ensuring all areas are well-organised
Vehicle Readiness:
● Ensure the vehicles scheduled next for loading or offloading are confirmed and prepared.
Trailer Management:
● Inspect and measure all vehicle trailers according to the SOP before loading.
Communication:
● Liaising with drivers, CPO, operations team, security, and management to resolve issues and ensure smooth operations
Process Improvement:
● Reviewing and implementing changes to checks, audits, and procedures.
Problem Solving:
● Addressing issues like delays, maintenance needs, or driver confusion quickly and efficiently
Documentation & Systems:
● Manage the weighbridge procedures, including the weighing of all vehicles.
● Managing At the Gate system
● Recording & reporting of any and all breakdowns
● Conduct trailer checklists and update systems accurately as per SOP.
● Process and manage decanting loads.
● Maintaining Linehaul Loading and offloading schedules.
● Maintaining accurate digital and physical records of vehicle
● Movements, driver check-ins/outs, and yard status.
Safety & Compliance:
● Conducting daily inspections
● Enforcing safety rules and regulations as per SOP
● Chock block all vehicles.
● Immediately report any incidents.
● Ensuring vehicles meet standards.
● Ensure safety by:
● Safe Distance: Maintain a minimum distance of 2 to 8 meters from the vehicle at all times to avoid being struck.
● Line of Sight: Always stand in a position where you can see the driver’s face in their side mirror. If the driver loses sight of you, they must stop the vehicle immediately.
● Avoid Dead Zones: Never stand directly behind a reversing vehicle or walk backward while guiding.
● Ensure chock blocks are in place before opening doors for offloading / loading
● Ensure that SOP is followed before offloading and loading commence Adherence to the SOP is mandatory prior to the commencement of both offloading and loading activities.
General
● Staff – lead & coach your team in applying the appropriate SOPs, making sure that all relevant disciplines and processes are adhered to and understood.
● Encouraging continuous improvement in your area of responsibility.
● Ensure effective document control in terms of all operational SOP’s.
● Monitor and escalate all material handling equipment concerns to relevant leaders.
● Strong Health & Safety awareness
● Strong communication & interpersonal skills for liaising with diverse teams.
● Alertness, Methodical approach & attention to detail for record-keeping and safety checks. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.
● Knowledge of commercial vehicle operations is advantageous.
