About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Medical Technologist – Histology to join our laboratory team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation, processing, and analysis of tissue specimens to support accurate pathological diagnosis while ensuring compliance with quality standards and laboratory protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, prepare, and process tissue specimens according to standard operating procedures.
- Perform tissue embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping procedures.
- Prepare special stains and assist with immunohistochemistry processes where required.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology laboratory equipment.
- Ensure accurate specimen identification and documentation throughout the testing process.
- Maintain quality control procedures and participate in quality assurance activities.
- Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering laboratory consumables.
- Adhere to laboratory safety regulations, infection control standards, and ethical guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and company policies.
- Assist pathologists and laboratory personnel with technical support where necessary.
- Participate in continuous professional development and competency assessments.
Minimum Requirements:
- National Diploma or Degree in Medical Technology / Biomedical Technology / Health Sciences with registration relevant to Histology practice.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technician/Technologist. (Histopathology)
- Minimum 1–3 years’ experience in a Histology laboratory preferred
Experience In:
- Tissue processing
- Embedding
- Microtomy
- Routine staining techniques
- Special stains (advantageous)
- Immunohistochemistry (advantageous)
- Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and accreditation requirements.
- Computer literacy and laboratory information systems experience advantageous.
- SANAS Audit experience
- Draft and approve SOP’s and WI’s to ensure compliance.
