Job Summary

We are looking for a highly skilled and results driven Mechanical Supervisor with a proven track record in managing and maintaining heavy earthmoving equipment and open-pit mine fleets. The successful candidate will ensure maximum fleet availability, operational reliability, and strict compliance with mine safety regulations. This individual will oversee day-to-day maintenance operations, manage legal pre-use checklists and authorisations, and act as the primary liaison with Original Equipment Manufactures (OEMs). The role reports directly to the Mine Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee the scheduled, preventative, and breakdown maintenance of all mine yellow machines (excavators, dump trucks, dozers, graders, etc) and ancillary fleet support vehicles.

Minimize equipment downtime through effective root-cause failure analysis and continuous optimization of maintenance schedules.

Ensure all mechanical workshop operations align with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines.

Enforce the rigorous completion and review of daily pre-start and operator checklists to ensure no compromised machinery enters the pit,

Manage and issue formal equipment operation and mechanical sign-offs/authorizations, ensuring only qualified and authorized personnel operate specific machinery.

Maintain accurate, legally compliant records of all machine inspections, service histories, and safety certifications.

Act as the primary technical point of contact for OEMs (e.g. CAT, Komatsu, Bell, Volvo,etc) regarding warranties, major competent overhauls, and specialised technical support.

Coordinate parts procurement, track component lead times, and manage service level agreements (SLAs) with external mechanical contractors.

Supervise, mentor, and allocate daily tasks to the team of diesel mechanics, artisans, and apprentices.

Drive strict culture of zero-harm, ensuring full compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) regulations within the workshop and field maintenance zones.

Requirements

Qualified Artisan with a Mechanical Trade Test Certificate with extensive heavy mobile equipment experience.

Grade 12 (Matric) or N3-N6 National Technical Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

Must be capable of holding a legal appointment in terms of the Mine and Health Safety Act (equivalent legal subordinate appointment).

Industry experience with a minimum of 5-8 years of post – trade mechanical experience within an open-pit / opencast mining environment.

At least 2-3 years in a supervisory or team leader capacity managing artisans, assistants, and field service contractors.

Proven track record working with heavy earthmoving equipment fleets such as CAT, Komatsu, Bell, Volvo, Hitachi,etc)

Deep understanding of the South African Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and standard hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) protocols.

Ability to manage shift handovers, delegate technical tasks effectively, and lead daily safety toolbox talks.
