Overview

Mechanical Fitter Jobs in Benoni at Crofts Gears (Pty) Ltd

About the Role

We manufacture industrial gearboxes, couplings, and related mechanical power transmission equipment for demanding applications across a range of industries. Our fitting shop is the core of our operation, and we are looking for a skilled, trade-tested Fitter to join the team.

You will be responsible for the full cycle of repair and assembly work — from stripping incoming units and diagnosing faults, through to precision assembly, surface finishing, and on-site installation support. This is hands-on, technical work where accuracy, mechanical judgement, and attention to detail are what define the quality of the output.

Key Responsibilities: Strip & Assess

  • Strip repair units systematically, laying out components in a logical and orderly manner to support accurate assessment and efficient reassembly.
  • Inspect and assess all components for damage, wear, and dimensional conformance — drawing clear conclusions on condition and serviceability.
  • Identify the probable root causes of component or unit failure and communicate findings clearly to the supervisor.

Assembly

  • Study assembly drawings and specifications to plan the most efficient build sequence for each job before work begins.
  • Take accurate measurements of components — both small and large — to verify fit and conformance to specification throughout the assembly process.
  • Identify potential problems early in the build and raise them before they affect the outcome.
  • Prepare components for assembly through lubrication, tapping, drilling, and polishing as required.
  • Mark out and cut materials using industrial tools, working to specification for fit and function.
  • Cut, bend, and fit hydraulic pipelines and weld metal components where required.
  • Apply protective coatings, fluids, or surface treatments to finished components to ensure durability and service life.
  • Maintain machinery and tooling used in component production — monitor condition and coordinate repair work when needed.
  • Liaise with machinists to ensure components are correctly machined and ready for assembly into larger units.
  • Assemble gear units and mechanical components fully in accordance with drawing specifications and quality standards.

Installation Support

  • When required, supervise or assist in the on-site installation of new gearboxes, ensuring all components are correctly set up and commissioned.
  • Provide technical input during installation to ensure compliance with assembly specifications and safe working practices.

General & Workshop

  • Record labour hours accurately in the time management system for every job — complete and on time.
  • Comply with all company quality requirements to ensure minimum product quality standards are consistently upheld.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly work area at all times — good housekeeping is a standard, not an option.
  • Carry out additional duties as reasonably required by the supervisor or management.

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Work in full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all applicable workshop safety requirements.
  • Promote and maintain awareness of environmental best practice in all day-to-day activities.
  • Use personal protective equipment correctly and consistently throughout the working day.
  • Report hazards, near-misses, and unsafe conditions promptly — do not walk past a risk.
  • Contribute to a safe, compliant working environment for yourself and your colleagues.

What We Are Looking For: Qualifications & Experience

  • Trade-tested Fitter — non-negotiable.
  • 3 to 5 years of post-trade experience in a mechanical assembly or manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience stripping and assembling gearboxes or equivalent precision mechanical equipment.
  • Competent in bearing fitting, shaft alignment, and the use of a hydraulic press.
  • Able to read and work from mechanical engineering drawings and assembly specifications.
  • Experienced with quality inspection and precision measurement tools (verniers, micrometers, dial gauges).
  • Practical exposure to welding, hydraulic pipework, or surface treatment processes is advantageous.

The Person

  • Methodical and precise — you plan your work, follow the drawing, and do not cut corners.
  • A strong fault-finder — you can look at a stripped unit and form a considered view on what went wrong and why.
  • Technically self-sufficient — able to work from drawings and specifications without needing constant direction.
  • Collaborative — you communicate clearly with machinists, supervisors, and colleagues to keep work flowing.
  • Takes ownership of quality, cleanliness, and record-keeping as a matter of professional standards.
  • Reliable, honest, and consistent — someone the team can count on.

This position description outlines the primary responsibilities of the role and is not exhaustive. It may be updated from time to time to reflect operational needs. Management may reasonably request the individual to carry out duties in addition to, or outside of, those listed above.
