Since 1950, Crofts Gears has been designing and manufacturing precision mechanical power transmission products — gears, couplings, and chain — for some of South Africa’s most demanding industries. Mining, sugar, materials handling, pulp and paper: if it turns, drives, or transmits load, we’re involved.
We manufacture both standard and bespoke solutions from our local facility, and we take pride in doing it properly. We’re growing, and we need someone who can keep up.
The Role
This isn’t a seat-warming drafting job. You’ll be working across the full lifecycle of complex mechanical components.
You will need to reproduce old redundant drawings, interpret a client’s rough sketch, and, in turn, create accurate, detailed drawings that are build-ready for our production team.
You’ll spend time on the factory floor. You’ll take field measurements on site and translate this into engineering reality. If that sounds like your kind of day, read on.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Producing detailed CAD drawings of gearboxes, couplings, shafts, housings, and transmission components.
- Reviewing specifications, sketches, and existing drawings to identify design constraints and opportunities.
- Compiling and checking Bills of Materials (BOMs), including component costing
- Performing quantity take-offs and contributing to job estimates — including time on the factory floor to properly scope the work.
- Coordinating with production, sales, and engineering staff to resolve design issues before they become manufacturing holdups.
- Modifying and revising drawings to correct deficiencies or improve manufacturability.
- Preparing technical illustrations for reference manuals and maintenance documentation.
- Attending site visits, tender briefings, and project review meetings as required
- Soliciting supplier and subcontractor quotations and maintaining up-to-date pricing records.
- Assisting with the compilation of failure reports and root cause analyses when required.
What We’re Looking For
You need to be mechanically minded — not just technically trained. There’s a difference. The right person reads a drawing and immediately starts thinking about how it goes together, where it might fail, and whether the tolerances make sense.
You should bring:
- Proven experience as a mechanical draftsperson, ideally in heavy industry or mechanical power transmission.
- Strong CAD proficiency (2D and 3D), Inventor and Autodesk – non-negotiable.
- The ability to read, interpret, and create detailed engineering drawings and specifications with confidence.
- Sound understanding of mechanical components — gears, shafts, bearings, couplings, fasteners.
- Comfort working across both the office and the factory floor — this role moves between both.
- A methodical approach to documentation, filing, and version control.
- Willingness to attend site visits and client meetings when required.
- Strong communication skills — you’ll regularly interface with sales, production, and customers.
- A valid driver’s licence — occasional travel to client sites will be required.
- Compliance with all company and client Health & Safety policies and procedures.
Package & Remuneration
Market related, commensurate with experience.
