- Maintaining Inventory
A lumberyard worker sorts and stacks lumber based on size and type so that the customer can easily find the lumber they need. Because of the physical nature of the job, the lumberyard worker must be physically fit and able to lift heavy loads. They also oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of the lumberyard, ensuring that stacks of wood stay neat and that the yard has a clean appearance. As shipments of new lumber come into the yard, the worker unloads the trucks and places the lumber in the correct spots in the yard or stacks it up out of the way to sort through and put away later.
- Assisting Customers
When a new customer visits the lumberyard, the worker answers the customer’s questions and shows them where to find what they need. The lumberyard worker educates a customer on the best type of lumber for that customer’s project needs. After a customer finds what they need, the worker loads up the lumber into the customer’s vehicle.
- Performing Miscellaneous Jobs
A lumberyard worker runs the saws, forklifts and other equipment and must adhere to all safety rules and regulations. Other duties include throwing out damaged pieces of wood and cutting wood, pipe and other materials to a customer’s specifications.
- Delivering
A lumberyard worker also may deliver material or assist on delivering material. This means the worker must be able to lift at least 100 pounds. Some of the materials that may be delivered are whole houses of sheetrock, each sheet weights 83 pounds and there are usually 100 pieces per house.
