To support this next chapter, we are looking to recruit a Legal Counsel – West Africa.
The Role
Reporting to the VP Legal, the Legal Counsel – West Africa will act as the primary legal advisor for the Group’s regional operations, with a particular focus on supporting the Kouroussa Gold Mine (KGM) in Guinea.
Based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Group’s West Africa regional hub, the role provides strategic and operational legal support to management teams, site operations, and regional corporate functions.
The position plays a central role in ensuring legally robust operations, sound contract governance, regulatory compliance, and effective management of external advisors across the region.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Advisory
- Act as primary legal advisor to regional management and operational teams.
- Provide pragmatic, business‑oriented legal guidance to support daily decision‑making.
- Identify legal issues early and manage them proactively in coordination with the VP Legal.
Commercial Contracts & Site Support
- Lead drafting, review, and negotiation of commercial contracts (operations, logistics, supply, consultancy, services).
- Ensure robust contract governance and proper legal documentation.
- Provide continuous legal support to site management during contract execution.
Regulatory & Government Matters
- Support regulatory compliance and interactions with government authorities.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments across relevant jurisdictions.
- Assist with permitting, licensing, and statutory obligations.
- Support legal matters linked to current and potential future operations in Côte d’Ivoire.
External Counsel & Dispute Management
- Manage relationships with local law firms and external advisors.
- Coordinate external legal advice and oversee litigation, arbitration, and claims.
- Support teams in dispute resolution, contractor claims, and contractual issues.
Profile
✓ Law degree and qualification to practise in a relevant jurisdiction
✓ 10–15 years of legal experience, ideally in mining, energy, infrastructure or project‑based industries
✓ Strong experience in drafting/negotiating commercial contracts
✓ Proven exposure to OHADA legal systems (mandatory)
✓ Experience in Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire is an advantage
✓ Experience in mining or natural resources sector strongly preferred
✓ Fluent in English and French
✓ Strong judgment, negotiation skills, and ability to operate in fast‑paced operational environments
