About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced Lead Mechanic to manage and maintain all heavy machinery used in our hotel construction project in Zanzibar. This includes equipment such as JCB machines, cranes, excavators, loaders, and other construction vehicles.

The ideal candidate will take full ownership of equipment performance, ensuring minimal downtime, efficient operation, and proper maintenance of all machinery on site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy construction equipment (JCB, cranes, excavators, loaders, etc.)
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults and carry out repairs
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules
  • Supervise and guide junior mechanics and technicians on site
  • Ensure all machinery is operating safely and efficiently
  • Coordinate with site managers to plan equipment usage and maintenance
  • Maintain records of servicing, repairs, and spare parts inventory
  • Source and manage spare parts and liaise with suppliers when needed
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns to minimize project delays
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and operational procedures

Requirements:

  • Proven experience (5+ years) as a heavy equipment or plant mechanic
  • Strong hands-on experience with machinery such as JCB, cranes, excavators, and loaders
  • Solid understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
  • Experience leading a team or working as a senior mechanic
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems under pressure
  • Good organizational and communication skills
  • Willingness to be based on-site in Zanzibar

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical certification or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Heavy Equipment Maintenance
  • Experience working on construction or large-scale development projects
  • Familiarity with equipment used in East Africa
  • Basic knowledge of inventory and procurement processes
