The University of Cape Town Lung Institute is looking for a meticulous and reliable Laboratory Technician to support specimen processing, storage, and quality control within our Centre for TB Research Innovation (CTBRI) Unit, ensuring all laboratory activities are conducted in line with study protocols and Good Clinical (Laboratory) Practice standards.
This role is offered under the University of Cape Town Lung Institute’s own employment terms and conditions, which are separate from UCT conditions of service.
⭐ What you bring:
- Bachelors in science or Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technical Certificate
- 1–3 years’ laboratory experience
- Valid GCP and GLCP Certificates (advantageous)
- Advanced computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), internet browsers, and medical databases
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organisational skills, with excellent attention to detail
- Ability to work autonomously
- Valid driver’s license (advantageous)
This isn’t just lab work; you’ll play a key role in safeguarding the integrity of samples and data behind groundbreaking research into tuberculosis, HIV/TB interaction, and drug-resistant TB.
What you’ll own:
- Specimen processing and storage, including maintaining biobanks and relevant documentation.
- Processing and handling all associated specimens according to protocol and laboratory manuals
- Maintaining an audit trail tracking each specimen’s progress through the laboratory
- Lab is responsible for documenting sample processing details as well as completing shipping documentation as per protocol requirements
- Maintaining study-specific Laboratory Working Files with all relevant documentation
- Maintaining temperature monitoring logs for fridges, freezers, and room temperature.
- Ensuring laboratory equipment is calibrated regularly as per SOP requirements
- Arranging transport/courier of specimens at specified intervals
- Maintaining Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Control (EQC) programs investigate any discordant data.
- Responding to audit findings and implementing remedial action where required
- Ensuring laboratory safety procedures are followed

- Fixed Term Contract (12 Months)
- Monday to Friday | 40 hours per week
- Based at UCTLI Mowbray
