POSITION AVAILABLE –LAB TECHNICIAN
Position Overview:
The Laboratory Technician performs a variety of inspections, sampling procedures and tests for the manufacturing process according to GRI and ASTM methods and standards. Compile quality control certificates and all related quality documents and records. Performs factory inspections and liaise with the Production and Logistics departments on all quality related procedures and standards. Requires knowledge of current good manufacturing and laboratory practices. Compliance to ISO 9001:2015 and contributing to a healthy and safe working environment in the company is essential. The Quality/Laboratory Technician is an advocate for quality in the company.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to the following duties and responsibilities, the Labour Code, Human Resource policies and procedures, working procedures and documentation covering the ISO guidelines and all health and safety policies and procedures applies to the position.
- In-coming Quality Control:
- Approve incoming raw materials by confirming specifications, conducting visual inspections, collecting samples, and performing standard tests, and rejecting unacceptable materials.
- Assist in complaint resolution of unacceptable raw material when needed.
- In-process Quality Control
- Approve in-process production by confirming required specifications, conducting visual and measurement tests, and communicating the required adjustments to the production team.
- Conduct daily factory inspections.
- Out-going Quality Control
- Approve all finished products by confirming specifications and conducting required tests.
- Prepare and dispatch samples to customers or to independent, third party testing laboratories.
- Initiate and follow through on quarantine procedure to isolate materials that fail to meet specifications.
- Inform Laboratory Manager, Production and where applicable Logistics of any quality defects.
- Metrology
- Keep measuring equipment operating by following operating instructions and notifying Laboratory Manager when repairs are needed.
- Assures that the internal calibration of measuring equipment is done based on defined intervals and procedures.
- Complete associated calibration records for measuring equipment.
- Administrative and quality management
- Document, interpret, review and update inspection results by completing reports and logs.
- Communicate quality or compliance concerns with urgency and initiate corrective action.
- Compile, review and update quality certificates and other quality related reports.
- Document and update test results, logs, databases and certificates.
- Adhere to good laboratory practices and ensure workplace is clean and presentable.
- Comply to the ISO 9001:2015 requirements for the quality assurance process.
- Cooperate with the SHEQ Manager to ensure compliance to procedures as set out in the ISO system.
- Continual Improvement
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications, attending seminars, watching industry videos, etc.
- Stay informed on general product knowledge.
- Assist in investigating customer complaints when needed.
- Support process improvements.
- Awareness of OHSAS 18001 standard, policies and procedures
- Follow ISO 9001:2015 standard procedures
- Follow all company policies and procedures

Qualifications & Skills:
- A diploma or a higher level of education in chemistry, quality, engineering or related
- No specific experience required. Experience in a similar role is an advantage.
- Knowledge of ISO systems and quality tools an advantage.
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office, especially, Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Good, basic math skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organization skills.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret information.
- Develop and maintain confidence, trust and good working relations with colleagues.
- A keen eye for detail and a results-driven approach.
- Ability to assimilate, understand and apply new information.
- Follow a pro-active approach without having to be prompted.

Remuneration Offered:
- Salary will be discussed at interview.
Appointment will be according to Employment Equity Plan. Non-equity candidates will be considered if a suitable equity candidate cannot be found. The best candidate for the job will be chosen.
