JOB PURPOSE
To ensure complete and accurate internal and external reporting of the Group’s financial results, adopt and maintain a financial controls governance framework inclusive of all financial systems and support the GCFO.
The Group Financial Controller (GFC) manages the delivery of all the Group’s financial accounting and all internal and external reporting requirements, provides technical accounting support to the GCFO and business, develops and designs appropriate financial controls, policies, and systems. They will also provide input into key funding, shareholder and transaction negotiations and contract discussions. The jobholder will liaise day to day with the Group CFO, the operating companies, external advisors, internal and external auditors and providers of banking facilities.
The GFC is responsible for financial oversight in all respects of the Cassava group which is an extremely large and complex group currently involving over 100 subsidiaries that operate in multiple jurisdictions across the African, Asian, European, North, Central and South American continents. The jurisdictions include Argentina, Botswana, Burundi, Chile, Columbia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Israel, Kenya, Mauritius, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, Peru, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A thorough understanding of complex group consolidations, accounting issues including dealing with hyperinflationary economies, regulatory environments, audits and tax issues are required in the role of the GFC.
Internal and external reporting responsibilities include external quarterly reporting, management of the group audit, internal management accounting, provision of technical accounting advice, monitoring of process and controls across the group, transactional accounting and preparation of materials for investor relations purposes. The jobholder is a key contributor to the design and deployment of the training and development structure for the finance function.
The GFC will further ensure that all financial systems are appropriately designed and fit for purpose to facilitate suitable governance on all day-to-day and key financial controls in the group. This includes ownership of the Group Consolidation systems, Enterprise Resource Planning systems, Billing systems, Reconciliation systems and KPI systems. Through the use of Business Intelligence technology, the GFC further aims to ensure that reporting to the business is timely, accurate and in an appropriate form that enables key decision making by the GCFO, GCEO, operating companies, subcommittees and Board.
Financial Reporting & Controls
Review and prepare the Group financial results and reporting each quarter.
Manage the external audit relationship, liaison between audit teams and opcos, to ensure that all issues debated and closed down within the required deadlines
Responsible for ensuring all accounting papers are produced each quarter, documenting the key accounting judgements and audit issues, together with the Group’s approach and position.
Co-own the governance processes to ensure all internal financial policies and procedures are adhered to and all external reporting and compliance obligations are met and that the Group is in compliance with its legal and statutory requirements in each territory with regard to statutory financials filings.
Own the preparation, completion and sign off of the Annual Financial Statements for the Cassava Group, including any sub-consolidated AFS and subsidiary financials.
Provide updates on key issues and significant risks to the Audit Committee.
Own financial elements of external announcements, liaising with the Investor Relations team to ensure that external announcements are issued on time and all investor queries are answered. Provide appropriate Q&A material to enable IR activity.
Collaborate with the Head of FP&A to ensure common understanding of Group wide issues on a month-by-month basis and action plans in place to remedy or address. Co-own the financial sections of Board reports and other reporting to shareholders and Committees.
Responsible for ensuring that the appropriate financial systems are in place and fit for purpose to enable efficient and accurate internal/external reporting.
Collaborates with Group Head of Tax & Local CFOs in ensuring that tax risks are identified and addressed, appropriate tax structures are in place, controls are effective and operating efficiently in the Group and that taxes are appropriately reported.
Group Management Reporting
Owning the annual reporting cycle for the group, including the appropriate sequencing of monthly/quarterly segment discussions, the setting the timelines on the delivery of the group consolidation for use in the external reporting to various stakeholders such as the Exco, Board and subcommittees.
Review month end results to ensure variances to budgets understood and run rates/KPIs continue to be achievable. Supporting Group management and departments heads with in-depth analysis of cost base (Group Marketing, IT, Products, C2, Network, Wholesale Voice)
Develop detailed management reporting to tight timescales by implementing robust financial reporting cycles and ensuring continuous improvement.
Prepare insightful and actionable insight reporting for GCFO, GCEO and Board
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Chartered Accountant / similar and Professional Accounting Body Membership mandatory
Degree of similar academic qualification
Experience at Executive Management level and leading teams across different locations
Technical financial experience
