The Resident Coordinator’s Office supports the work of the UN Resident Coordinator and coordinates activities of the UN Country Team in its engagement with the Government as defined by the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). Kenya is currently implementing UNDAF 2018 – 2022, which is the medium-term results framework that describes the response of the UN system to national development priorities. UNDAF describes how the UN country team will contribute to the achievement of development results based on a common country analysis and the UN comparative advantage. The Resident Coordinator is leading and strategically positioning the United Nations country team in Kenya to respond to the current national priorities, mainly to Kenya’s Vision 2030, Medium-Term Plan III and the Big Four Agenda. The Office has five core functions: Strategic Planning Economics Partnerships and development finance Data and results management and reporting Communications and advocacy
Context
The UN Kenya Common Back Office (KCBO) is a pioneering initiative launched in January 2024 and represents the first model of its kind globally. Designed to streamline and harmonize operational support across UN entities operating in and from Kenya, the KCBO provides a comprehensive suite of common services that enhance efficiency, strengthen collaboration, and improve service delivery. These services are primarily hosted and delivered by the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), covering Administration and Premises, ICT, Procurement, and Human Resources. In addition, logistics support is provided by WFP, while Finance and HACT services are offered by UNICEF. Having completed two years of collaborative implementation, the KCBO is now entering a critical phase of reflection and strategic recalibration. The Kenya CBO Annual Results Report will assess progress to date, capture lessons learned, and outline priorities for 2026 and beyond. This report will integrate findings from the KCBO Client Survey and will align with the 2024 CBO Transitional Reporting Methodology issued by the Development Coordination Office (DCO) and the CBO Task Team, operating under the UNSDG Business Innovation Group (BIG) and the guidance of the UNSDG Reference Group. The report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of KCBO operations, including governance arrangements, service uptake, the number of SLAs signed, and the scope of services provided. It will also present cost-efficiency figures, highlight KCBO’s effectiveness, and document innovative initiatives contributing to improved UN operations and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, the report will feature insights from Service Providers and Clients regarding challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for improvement. Additional input from senior management will illustrate the value of KCBO services at the entity level and outline strategic opportunities for strengthening UN operations in Kenya in the coming years. The content of this report will be elaborate by the CBO Coordination Unit.
