Summary
Take responsibility for selling works of art to build gallery income. Maintain relationships with clients, artists and fellow team members. Process transactions and follow-up on purchases.
Duties
Duties can be broad in scope and include tasks related to sales, correspondence, and customer service. Also handle phone traffic, prepare and process invoices. During regular hours and special events, ensure that the gallery is clean and handle daily maintenance. Responsible for monitoring and keeping artwork safe while the gallery is open. Greet visitors, answer questions and field sales inquiries. As the first person visitors encounter at a gallery, must be personable, knowledgeable about artists and exhibits and have the ability to remember names and faces. Promote current and upcoming exhibits and ensure that visitors do not damage any works in the gallery.
Sales associates typically help with the physical installation of exhibits. This may include painting or repairing walls and pedestals and hanging artwork. They may also assist with keeping the gallery’s website and social media outlets up to date as required.
Responsibilities
Day-to-day tasks of gallery:
Promote and sell artists’ work, through both walk-in clients and personal outreach
Ensure the gallery is readied and opened on time
Develop client lists by notifying potential clients of works and exhibitions, according to their interests
Extend the client database
Respond to internet/telephone requests for information and process any orders
Work during art festivals
Work closely with individual artists
Assist with packing and shipping of artwork
Unpack, inspect and catalogue into inventory new art that arrives at the gallery
Keep up to date with industry developments and market trends
Any other tasks that may be relevant to ongoing gallery business
Education and Training Requirements
May have a bachelor’s degree in a related subject. Have at least 5 years of retail sales experience. Proficient in use of a computer.
Have strong communication skills to work with gallery staff and outside parties on long-term projects. Have multi-tasking skills and be a self-starter.
Working Conditions
A Sales Associate is usually found working in the gallery. Their working hours can extend during gallery events, and may be required to work during weekends, or when the gallery is open. Must be able to lift 30Lbs.
