Job Description

The Financial Accountant will provide strategic and operational financial oversight to ensure sound financial management, donor compliance and strengthened financial systems in alignment with NGO best practice and regulatory requirements. The role includes analysing financial data, identifying risks and opportunities and providing actionable recommendations to support organisational sustainability.

Roles and Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Review, strengthen and maintain financial systems, policies and procedures.
  • Analyse financial statements.
  • Prepare and review financial reports for management, board and donors
  • Ensure accurate budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.
  • Support monthly and annual financial reporting processes.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts.
  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with statutory deductions (PAYE, UIF, etc.).

Donor Compliance & Grant Management

  • Ensure compliance with donor agreements and reporting requirements.
  • Assist with grant budgeting, financial tracking and expenditure analysis.
  • Support preparation of donor financial reports and audits.
  • Monitor funding allocations.
  • Ensure accurate cost allocation across programmes.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with local statutory, tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audit processes.
  • Identify financial risks and recommend mitigation measures.

Capacity Building & Advisory

  • Provide financial guidance and mentorship to Thornybush Community team.
  • Support organisational planning with financial analysis and advice
  • Strengthen financial literacy across Thornybush Community team, where required

Other Responsibilities

  • Assess funding options
  • Assist in implementation of financial systems and process improvements

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in financial management and/or financial consulting within an NGO or donor-funded environment
  • Strong knowledge of donor compliance and grant management
  • Experience with financial systems and accounting software, i.e. Pastel and Xero
