Expert Control & Instrumentation Engineer (Pr Eng)
Purpose of the Position
To provide specialist engineering expertise in Control and Instrumentation (C&I) systems, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant and process control systems. The incumbent will be responsible for the design, analysis, optimisation, maintenance support, and governance of control and instrumentation engineering activities in accordance with statutory, regulatory, and organisational requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:
- External BTech / BEng Qualification not ratified by ECSA – Minimum 2 years relevant engineering experience.
- External Technical Diploma ratified by ECSA or Internal Diploma – Minimum 4 years relevant engineering experience.
- External BEng Qualification ratified by ECSA or Internal BEng Degree – Relevant engineering experience as required by the organisation.
Professional Registration
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is mandatory.
- Proof of current ECSA registration must accompany the application.
Minimum Experience
- Extensive experience in Control and Instrumentation Engineering within power generation, industrial, petrochemical, manufacturing, mining, or similar heavy industrial environments.
- Demonstrated experience in:
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
- SCADA Systems
- Instrumentation and Process Control
- Plant Optimisation and Reliability Engineering
- Root Cause Analysis and Problem Solving
- Project Management and Engineering Governance
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist engineering support on Control and Instrumentation systems.
- Develop and review engineering designs, specifications, standards, and procedures.
- Conduct technical investigations, fault finding, and root cause analyses.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, statutory requirements, and safety regulations.
- Lead plant improvement and optimisation initiatives.
- Evaluate and approve engineering modifications and technical solutions.
- Support maintenance strategies to improve plant reliability and performance.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical personnel.
- Participate in risk assessments, audits, and engineering reviews.
- Manage engineering projects and provide technical leadership throughout project lifecycles.
Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced knowledge of Control and Instrumentation engineering principles.
- Strong understanding of plant control philosophies and process automation.
- Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, and legislation.
