ROLE SUMMARY

The Estimator position provides support to the Sales team through the development of proposal estimates and maintenance of pricing references. This position is also responsible for data maintenance of the pricing calculators to ensure proper pricing structures to facilitate obtaining the desired sales prices & related margin on the quoted references & or projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (JOB PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES)

  • Review Requests for Proposal (RFP) specifications and drawings to understand the scope of work and determine the required contents of estimate
  • Prepare bottom-up estimates of labour, materials and other costs, based on proposed scope of work
  • Collaborate with other critical company functions to formulate estimates and resolve proposal issues
  • Maintain supporting detail for all estimate figures, including current and accurate information on prices from suppliers through cooperation with the Buyer, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
  • Assess risk in the elements of the proposal and recommend mitigation opportunities
  • Assist with the proposal review process (i.e., validate thought process) prior to sign-off and submittal to customer
  • Review final approved drawings to validate the material and labour requirements against final proposal and prepare itemized lists for production
  • Compute cost factors and prepare estimates used for management purposes such as preparing bids and determining cost effectiveness
  • Develop/revise, document and implement estimating processes, as needed, and participate in company improvement initiatives
  • Perform other duties, as assigned by manager

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of steel dimensions and measurements
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings & BOM’s to facilitate the estimation process
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, with Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills
  • Ability to maintain a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure, and willing to work additional hours to meet tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Self-starter, dynamic and reliable (Drives for results & success)
  • Decisive, with strong decision-making skills
  • Personally accountable – Manages the estimating process, ensuring proposals incorporate a logical Basis of Estimate (BOE) and drives to on-time proposal completion, despite situations which might cause delays

  • Strong communicator – Creates an atmosphere in which timely and high-quality information flows smoothly between self and others
  • 2 or more years full-time employment history
  • 2 or more years of experience in estimating, controls and/or engineering experience related to similar or comparable industry
  • Project Management/construction experience with estimating a plus
  • Prior SAP/IFS or other ERP systems experience desirable
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
