Mission and objectives

The Dakar hub operates as a sub-regional office of RBA covering West and Central Africa (WCA). It provides country offices in the WCA sub-region with dedicated management support, as well as policy and programming advisory services in key RBA priority areas, bringing this expertise closer to UNDP’s operational needs in the field. In addition, the Dakar sub-regional hub hosts RBA’s Sahel team, which provides dedicated support to country offices in that sub-region, as part of its contribution to the UN’s strategy for the Sahel. Under the overall guidance of the RBA Director and under the administrative and day to day management of the Regional Service Center for Africa (RSCA) Hub Director based in Addis Ababa, the WCA Sub-Regional Hub Manager leads the work of the Dakar sub-regional hub team, ensuring effective and quality support to UNDP country offices in the WCA sub-region. In addition, s/he leads the development and implementation of sub-regional initiatives, including work on the UN Integrated Strategy for the Sahel and fosters strong programmatic and advocacy partnerships with sub-regional institutions and other partners, including other UN agencies and members of the WCA Regional United Nations Sustainable Development Group (RUNSDG).

Context

The UNDP sub-regional Hub for West and Central Africa and the Senegal Country Office, in Dakar, Senegal, have developed their separate annual reports around their respective portfolios for 2025. To ensure the highest quality and consistency of these reports before publication, we are seeking two experienced online volunteers to provide editing and proofreading support on these reports. The selected online volunteers will have a unique opportunity further to enhance professional skills in an international development context, enhance cross-cultural communication abilities, and contribute to impactful work that advances gender equality and inclusive growth in the region.

Task description

The two Online Volunteers will be responsible for editing and proofreading the regional and 5 country office reports to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency in language, style, and formatting. They will work collaboratively, coordinating closely to maintain a uniform tone and structure across all documents. The two Online Volunteers will:

  • Edit and proofread their assigned reports for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and overall language quality.
  • Ensure consistency in terminology, style, and formatting across all reports.
  • Check for clarity, coherence, and logical flow of content, making suggestions for improvement where necessary.
  • Verify that references, footnotes, and annexures are correctly formatted.
  • Coordinate regularly with each other to align on editing standards and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Liaise regularly with the thematic specialists and teams, where needed, to clarify content, incorporate feedback, and address any questions.
  • Ensure that the final versions are ready for publication, adhering to UNDP guidelines (to be provided).

Assignment requirements

Required Experience

Experience in editing and proofreading technical or academic publications. – Excellent command of written English, for reports in English and written French for reports in French, with strong attention to detail and accuracy. – Ability to work collaboratively and coordinate effectively with another volunteer. – Experience working with style guides and publication standards. – Familiarity with international development, social protection and care, gender equality, or related topics is an asset.
