The Dispatcher is responsible for ensuring the daily coverage for school bus routes and field trips, answer telephone calls from our customers and the public, communicating changes and instructions to drivers. The Dispatcher is also responsible to ensure all drivers accurately complete and turn in all paperwork including but not limited to DBR’s, DVIR’s, incident reports, updated route sheets, charter trip sheets, etc. Responsible to ensure positive check-in and key collection occurs at the beginning and end of each shift. Must have the ability to drive a bus, as needed.

Specific Duties:

  • Ensure employees report to work as scheduled and complete and file paperwork.
  • Provide updates on route/traffic issues, notices and concerns on route, immediately to terminal management for resolution.
  • Maintain, manage, and update driver schedules and ADR’s daily.
  • Report concerns, violations, or issues to the Operations Manager.
  • Assign substitute drivers as needed.
  • Enter, plan, schedule, and assign drivers for special transportation including field trips, athletic events, charter trips etc.
  • Assist in developing routes, provide updates and schedules.
  • Schedule drivers’ physicals and maintain records.
  • Answer heavy telephone volume and communicate on two-way radio.
  • Maintain records of mileage, fuel consumption, and other related data.
  • Ensure employees perform the required daily vehicle inspection and buses are cleaned daily as required by law.
  • Assist maintenance in directing/scheduling vehicles to the shop for maintenance.
  • Ability to cross-train at Assist-To-Transport dispatch role to ensure operational coverage, as needed.
  • Must be open for On-call for emergencies and weekends, as needed based upon work schedule.
  • Collateral duties as assigned by Operations Manager.
  • Computer proficient with software experience in mapping and routing. Microsoft Office with focus on Word and Excel.
  • Use GPS to monitor routes and schedules to update, modify and adjust for efficiencies in operational routes run.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma, clerical skills, strong computer skills. Valid commercial license with passenger endorsement and school bus certificate a plus.

  • Familiarity with the laws, regulations and policies governing student transportation; ability to read a map, to coordinate and schedule bus routes in a logical manner; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with employees and our customers; good judgment, ability to make sound decisions; knowledge of computers, clerical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with duties. Familiar with the school district, school locations, general knowledge of the routes and stops; and field trip destinations.
  • Great communication skills and the ability to multi-task functions and priorities competing tasks.
