Customs Specialist

Job Purpose

The Bidvest International Logistics Customs team is looking to appoint a Customs Specialist. The purpose is to ensure Customs compliance across the supply chain by implementing and enforcing the Customs and Excise Act, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Liaise with and enforce the legislation and regulation of other government departments and regulatory bodies.

Qualifications & Experience

• Grade 12 / Matric

• Suitable qualification in terms of the Customs & Excise Act, Rules and Regulations

• Successful qualification of a Leadership programme

• Extensive experience in forwarding and clearing industry at operations as well as management level

• Advanced qualification and exposure in terms of Customs Tariff Classification and associated General Rules of Interpretation, Rules for Valuation, Rules of Origin

• Applying the legislative parameters of the Customs & Excise Act, Rules & Regulations at different levels throughout the supply chain

• Extensive exposure and interaction with SARS Customs & other Government Organisations at all levels

• Proven record of managing and leading teams/employees

Key Responsibilities

• Perform pre-clearance audit to ensure correctness and accuracy of draft declarations

• Submit declarations and motivations to Customs on a daily basis, in order to obtain the release of client’s cargo

• Perform pre- and post clearance audits to identify and rectify errors during pre-and post clearances to minimise risk

• Motivate applications for tariff determination to ensure correct application of tariff determination

• Motivate applications for Value Determination to ensure correct application of Value Determination

• Monitor and control the daily activities of the team

* Ensure full adherence to the prescribed policies and procedures within the team * Develop and maintain best practices to inform business and clients of Customs responses

• Identify potential risk areas and implement mitigating strategies for the team

• Implement checks and controls in an attempt to avoid penalties and reputational risk

• Liaise with KAM’s and Service Consultants to ensure client requirements are met and regarding existing and future client requirements

• Manage employee performance and development to optimize utilization of employee skills

• Managing information to support and improve operational efficiency and client satisfaction

• Perform internal and external bond store inspections and prepare appropriate audit reports and recommendations
