Job Summary
The Courier Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the courier dispatch, routing, and warehouse sorting teams. This role ensures that all inbound and outbound parcels are processed efficiently, routes are optimized, and deliveries meet strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The Supervisor manages a team of drivers and warehouse staff, monitors fleet compliance, and acts as the primary point of escalation for operational issues.
Key Responsibilities
1. Daily Operations & Dispatch Management
- Oversee the sorting, scanning, and loading of all inbound and outbound freight.
- Plan and optimize daily driver routes to maximize efficiency and minimize fuel consumption.
- Ensure all drivers depart the depot on time and with the correct waybills and parcels.
- Monitor delivery progress throughout the day using tracking software, identifying and resolving any delays or bottlenecks.
- Manage the debriefing process when drivers return, ensuring all undelivered parcels (returns/RTS) are accurately logged and accounted for.
2. Staff Management & Leadership
- Supervise, train, and guide a team of courier drivers, warehouse sorters, and dispatch clerks.
- Manage staff rosters, attendance, overtime, and leave schedules.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and address any disciplinary or grievance issues in line with company policy.
- Ensure all staff are properly trained on scanning equipment, handling procedures, and customer service standards.
3. Health, Safety & Fleet Compliance
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections (pre-trip inspections) to ensure the fleet is roadworthy, clean, and well-maintained.
- Report any vehicle defects, accidents, or scheduled maintenance requirements to the Fleet Manager.
- Enforce Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards within the warehouse, ensuring staff wear correct PPE (e.g., safety boots, high-visibility vests).
- Ensure the safe handling and loading of goods, particularly fragile or hazardous materials.
4. Customer Service & Escalations
- Act as the operational point of contact for the customer service team regarding delayed, lost, or damaged parcels.
- Investigate and resolve customer complaints related to delivery drivers or operational failures.
- Ensure drivers maintain a professional appearance and attitude when interacting with clients.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Grade 12 / Matric certificate (A Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field is highly advantageous).
- Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in the courier, logistics, or express freight industry, with at least 1 to 2 years in a supervisory or team lead capacity.
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license (Code 08 / Code 10 preferred).
- Clearances: Clear criminal record.

- Technical Skills: Proficiency in logistics routing software, parcel tracking systems, and MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Leadership: Strong ability to motivate, manage, and discipline a diverse team of blue-collar workers.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to think on your feet and resolve logistical emergencies (e.g., vehicle breakdowns, absent drivers) quickly.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Resilience: High stress tolerance with the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
