What You’ll Do
As a Correctional Officer, you’ll play an essential role in maintaining the safety and security of the facility while supervising incarcerated individuals and supporting daily operations.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervise incarcerated individuals in housing units, work assignments, classrooms, dining areas, recreation, and other program areas
- Maintain safety, security, and order by enforcing facility rules and policies
- Conduct resident counts, security inspections, and searches to prevent contraband
- Monitor behavior, document incidents, and prepare accurate reports
- Respond to emergencies using approved safety procedures, de-escalation techniques, and physical intervention when necessary
- Escort incarcerated individuals throughout the facility as required
- Operate radios, restraints, and other security equipment
- Work collaboratively with fellow staff to maintain a secure environment
- Provide first aid or CPR when necessary
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Pass a background investigation, physical examination, and drug screening
- No felony convictions
- No adult misdemeanor domestic battery convictions (unless eligible under Kansas law)
- Kansas Tax Clearance required following a conditional offer of employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Correctional Officer Certification (earned through KDOC Basic Training)
- CPR/First Aid certification and annual weapons qualification
- Previous experience in corrections, law enforcement, military, or security
- Strong communication, observation, and conflict resolution skills
