About the Role
We manufacture industrial gearboxes, couplings, and related mechanical power transmission equipment for demanding applications across a range of industries. Precision CNC machining is at the core of our production capability, and we are looking for an experienced CNC Machinist / Programmer to join our machine shop team.
This is a combined programming and operating role. You will be responsible for the full cycle — from studying engineering drawings and writing part programs, through machine setup, first-off verification, in-process inspection, and production running on 3-axis vertical machining centres and CNC turning centres. You will work to tight tolerances, maintain exacting quality standards, and actively contribute to a high-performance manufacturing environment.
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, approaches problems with a can-do attitude, and is willing to put in the hours when customer requirements demand it.
Key Responsibilities: Job Planning & Process Preparation
- Study work orders, engineering drawings, blueprints, orthographic views, and material specifications to fully understand the job before programming begins.
- Interpret geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) to determine machining strategies, reference planes, surface locations, and sequencing.
- Select the appropriate machines, tooling, materials, and fixturing for each job, and establish efficient work procedures for new components.
- Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to indicate placement of cuts prior to setup.
- Confer with engineers, supervisors, and production personnel to clarify technical requirements and exchange information before and during production.
CNC Programming
- Write and prove CNC part programs for 3-axis vertical machining centres and CNC turning centres using FANUC controls or equivalent.
- Enter instructions including zero and reference points, tool registers, offsets, compensation values, and conditional switches.
- Calculate machining requirements using mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry — including gear dimensions, depths of cut, feeds, and speeds.
- Prove out new programs on the machine, verifying that toolpaths, coordinates, and outputs meet specifications before committing to production.
- Confer with CNC programmers and engineering to verify new programs and confirm that output will meet drawing requirements.
- Update, adjust, and reprogram controls as required during production to optimise performance or correct deviations.
- Evaluate machining procedures and recommend process improvements for better efficiency, repeatability, and adaptability.
Machine Setup
- Set up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers as required.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and accessories on the machine — indicate vices and tram heads to specification.
- Load stock into position using lifting equipment where required.
- Set tool registers, offsets, feed rates, cutting speeds, depths, and angles prior to first-off production.
- Verify machine settings by measuring positions, running first-off parts, and inspecting sample workpieces before releasing to full production.
Machining Operations & In-Process Control
- Operate CNC turning and machining centres to produce precision metal components for gearbox, chain, and coupling assemblies to drawing specification.
- Monitor feed rates, cutting speeds, and machine behaviour continuously during production — observe, listen, and respond to any changes in machine sound or performance.
- Perform turning, facing, boring, grooving, knurling, thread chasing, milling, and drilling operations as required by the job.
- Ensure workpieces are correctly lubricated and cooled throughout the machining process.
- Detect and troubleshoot malfunctions, process deviations, and tooling wear — take corrective action promptly to prevent scrap.
- Sharpen and replace worn tooling in accordance with the tooling schedule and as machining conditions require.
Quality & Inspection
- Calculate and verify component dimensions and tolerances using micrometres, vernier callipers, dial gauges, and other precision instruments.
- Inspect first-off and in-process components to detect defects and confirm conformance to drawing specifications and GD&T requirements.
- Adhere to all quality assurance procedures and company quality standards — minimum product quality is non-negotiable.
- Complete production and quality logs accurately for every job — records must be current and correct.
- Record labour hours in the time management system accurately and on time.
Machine Care & Maintenance
- Complete scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and the machine maintenance programme.
- Clean and lubricate machines, tooling, and equipment regularly to remove swarf, grease, rust, and foreign matter.
- Diagnose machine malfunctions by observing performance and listening to operating sounds — log faults and call for repairs when required.
- Install repaired or replacement parts and verify operational efficiency following maintenance or repair work.
- Maintain machines, tooling, and the work area in a consistently clean and orderly condition — good housekeeping is an expected standard.
Knowledge Sharing & Mentoring
- Take an active role in the training and development of apprentices and less experienced machinists — share programming techniques, setup methods, and inspection practices on the job.
- Provide structured guidance to junior team members on machine operation, tooling selection, and process discipline, helping to build a stronger machine shop capability over time.
- Support the transfer of CNC programming knowledge within the team — document programs, settings, and processes clearly so that knowledge is retained and accessible.
- Model the standards you expect of others: precision, housekeeping, safety compliance, and ownership of quality.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with engineers, supervisors, fitters, and fellow machinists — communicate clearly and proactively to keep production flowing.
- Support metalworking projects from initial planning and fabrication through to assembly, inspection, and testing.
- Actively explore opportunities to add value, improve processes, and solve problems — accept ownership of new challenges as they arise.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to keep technical knowledge and programming skills current.
- Carry out additional duties as reasonably required by the supervisor or management.
Health, Safety & Environment
- Work in full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all applicable machine shop safety requirements.
- Promote and maintain environmental awareness in all activities — responsible handling of coolants, lubricants, swarf, and waste is expected.
- Use personal protective equipment correctly and consistently — this is non-negotiable in a CNC machining environment.
- Ensure all machine guards and safety interlocks are in place and functioning before operating any equipment.
- Report hazards, near-misses, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor immediately.
- Contribute to a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues at all times.
What We Are Looking For: Qualifications & Experience
- CNC Programming qualification at NQF Level 4 — essential.
- 3 to 5 years of proven experience as a CNC machinist/programmer in a precision manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience programming and operating CNC turning centres and 3-axis vertical machining centres.
- FANUC control experience is strongly preferred; other equivalent CNC control systems will be considered.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.
- Strong mathematical ability — comfortable applying geometry and trigonometry to real machining problems.
- Competent with precision measurement instruments: micrometres, vernier callipers, dial gauges, and bore gauges.
- Experience machining components for gearboxes, power transmission equipment, or similar precision assemblies is advantageous.
- Prior experience training or mentoring apprentices or junior machinists is an advantage.
