The Chief Electrical Engineer (Pr Eng) will be reporting to the Head of EC&I Engineering based at our Midrand, Gauteng office. The successful candidate will be responsible for protection settings, HV/MV substation design, grid compliance and connection/integration across project phases. The role provides technical leadership, oversees QA/QC, mentors engineering teams, and liaises with clients, utilities and regulators to ensure safe, compliant delivery of complex power and renewable energy projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical delivery on protection settings, relay coordination and protection system design for substations and networks.
  • Oversee substation design (HV/MV), SCADA/telemetry integration and power system studies to ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Ensure grid compliance and manage network connection and integration activities with utilities and stakeholders.
  • Develop, review and approve protection settings, relay configuration, single-line diagrams, wiring schematics and technical specifications.
  • Provide technical leadership on project design, commissioning, testing and handover.
  • Lead and mentor engineering teams; drive best practices, QA/QC and continuous improvement.
  • Liaise with clients, utilities, suppliers and regulatory bodies to secure approvals and resolve technical issues.
  • Prepare technical reports, risk assessments, and cost estimates as required.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in electrical engineering with proven senior role experience.
  • Expertise in protection settings and relay coordination
  • Strong track record in substation design (HV/MV), earthing, cable sizing and equipment specification.
  • Experience with grid compliance, connection studies, network integration and utility liaison.
  • Proficient in power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD) and protection setting tools.
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder engagement, communication and project management skills.
