Summary
This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. Incumbent performs non-professional, quasi-professional, and technical work that supports access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over records. The work encompasses the full range of archival support services.
Duties
Help
As an Archives Technician, you will:
- Provide written and oral "first-line" reference assistance and consultation, responding to all forms of inquiry concerning NARA's broad range of archival holdings, in original or surrogate format, by using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats.
- Review information about records prior to making them available to researchers, ensuring that access restrictions are being followed.
- Participate in the digitization efforts of archival holdings for public access and permanent retention following broad NARA guidance and procedures.
- Evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten the safety of records.
- Pull and refile records according to NARA policies and procedures.
- Monitor research rooms and provide customer service.
- May carry out other archival duties as assigned.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. - A probationary or trial period may be required. Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
- If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
- Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
- This position MAY require candidates to pass a physical abilities test designed to measure candidates ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 30-50 pound boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 15 feet high.

Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-07: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-06 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Performing archival or related functions. (Examples may include monitoring, pulling and refilling records, reference, and researcher assistance) AND
- Applying regulations, policies, or procedures to accomplish work assignments.
Specialized Experience for the GS-06: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-05 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:
- Communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing. AND
- Using systems to locate items and/or using documentation to identify information relevant to a work assignment.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following requirements, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
Time-in-Grade: For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-06level for 52 weeks.
Time-in-Grade: For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks..
Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
