We create and use data and evidence to help our public and private sector partners refine strategies, improve programs, and advance knowledge. Over the past two decades, we have developed a large portfolio of research and evaluation work that spans more than 60 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Our work provides actionable learning to guide decision-making and improve outcomes in a range of policy areas, including health and nutrition; water, sanitation, and hygiene; agriculture and food systems; climate change; education and workforce development; and energy. We work with a range of public and private sector clients, including bilateral and multilateral organizations, foundations, multi-donor partnerships, INGOs, academic institutions, and private companies.

About the opportunity

Mathematica Global seeks a highly motivated and skilled research analyst with experience in topics related to international development, preferably in the health, agriculture, and/or energy sectors. The research analyst will work collaboratively in cross-disciplinary teams on projects that support strategy development, results measurement, program evaluation and improvement, and policy advancement for our clients. These teams often include Mathematica and EDI staff, international consultants, and in-country partners.

Ideal candidates will thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced, team-based environment that values analytical rigor, critical thinking, and a client-centered approach, and have a skill set that includes strong research and analytical skills, a passion for supporting international development, a commitment to using data and evidence to drive change, an interest in applying innovative research and evaluation methods, and an ability to produce high-quality work in the face of compressed timelines and changing circumstances.

Important employment information

We are hiring for this skillset as we develop our business and generate work.

However, if an offer is extended, it will be contingent upon the successful award of relevant work. If you accept the offer and the contingency is removed, you will join EDI Global as a full-time, regular employee. After applying, if you are considered for the opportunity, a member of Mathematica’s Talent Acquisition team would be happy to explain more details about the contingent nature of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Working on interdisciplinary, cross-location research teams to implement evaluations and a range of measurement and learning efforts using a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods; you will have the opportunity to contribute to and grow your skills in impact evaluation, strategy and portfolio reviews, performance measurement, dashboard development for multi-project initiatives, and a range of other methods.
  • Conducting evidence reviews and synthesizing findings to inform programmatic and strategic decisions.
  • Developing survey instruments, focus group discussion guides, and in-depth interview guides to collect information from a variety of stakeholders, including the ultimate populations who are served by the programmes we evaluate, those implementing these programmes on the ground, such as health care providers or agriculture extension workers, and those overseeing these programmes, such as implementing partner staff and government officials.
  • Overseeing local partners conducting quantitative and qualitative data collection (including supporting efforts to pilot and refine instruments, leading training sessions for data collectors, training data quality observers, conducting data checks, and supporting other data quality assurance efforts).
  • Conducting in-depth analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and preparing public use data sets; this might also include the application of innovative methods such as remote sensing.
  • Working with project teams to develop reports, data visualizations, policy briefs, and slide decks that describe our approach and share our results and analysis, as well as action-oriented lessons and recommendations, with a range of audiences; support and participate in meetings, presentations, and learning workshops that facilitate discussion of our results and their implications.
  • Supporting facilitation of meetings and engagements with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, foundations, international organizations, and consultants.
  • Leveraging generative AI tools to support evaluation and research activities – such as synthesizing literature or drafting analysis summaries – and integrating GenAI-enabled approaches into adaptive learning and decision-making processes.
  • Supporting the growth of the Global division by contributing to proposals and other business development efforts.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of Stata, R, GIS tools, Python, and/or NVivo or other qualitative analysis software.
  • Field and/or research experience in low or middle-income countries and in the health, agriculture, and/or energy sectors.

  • Excellent oral communication skills, including an ability to collaborate in a poised and professional manner with clients, implementing partners, consultants, and other external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex quantitative and qualitative findings into clear, compelling data visualizations and presentation materials for reports, slide decks, and client-facing communications.
  • Proven ability to work on teams to deliver high-quality products while meeting deadlines and managing multiple competing priorities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally, generally one to two trips per year.
