Purpose of the Job

The Account Manager is responsible for driving the financial and operational success of assigned client accounts, ensuring service excellence and sustainable business growth. This role encompasses managing account profitability, fostering strong client relationships, leading staff performance, overseeing fleet operations, and embedding a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Account Management

  • Take full accountability for the financial and operational performance of assigned client accounts, ensuring profitability and sustainable growth.
  • Act as the principal liaison for clients, maintaining clear, consistent communication regarding service levels, operational performance, and associated costs.
  • Build and nurture long-term business relationships by conducting regular review meetings, delivering professional presentations, and ensuring client expectations are met or exceeded.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance distribution solutions and service offerings, tailoring strategies to each client’s unique requirements.
  • Ensure all accounts are managed in strict alignment with the Service Excellence Charter, embedding a culture of quality and reliability.

Financial Management

  • Prepare accurate budgets for each account, monitoring monthly Profit & Loss statements to ensure financial objectives are achieved.
  • Exercise stringent cost control across all expenditure categories, including fuel, repairs, maintenance, sub-hires, salaries, and wages.
  • Validate and authorise procurement orders within required timeframes, ensuring compliance with company policies and financial controls.
  • Monitor fuel consumption and accident reports, implementing corrective strategies to reduce costs, mitigate risks, and improve efficiency.
  • Consistently deliver on financial targets, ensuring accounts remain profitable and aligned with organisational objectives.

Customer Service Management

  • Provide professional and constructive feedback to clients on operational performance and KPI outcomes.
  • Adapt service delivery to meet evolving client needs, offering tailored solutions that balance efficiency with cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with clients to redesign or simulate distribution models, driving improvements in service quality and operational efficiency.
  • Lead monthly review meetings to evaluate service levels, identify gaps, and propose actionable improvements.

Staff Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and mentor team members to ensure their well-being, engagement, and professional growth.
  • Enforce adherence to company policies, procedures, and leave management processes, maintaining fairness and consistency.
  • Conduct bi-annual performance appraisals, setting clear objectives, measurable targets, and service delivery expectations.
  • Uphold discipline within the team, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous development.

Fleet Oversight

  • Ensure all vehicles are maintained in accordance with company policy, manufacturer standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular fleet inspections, monitoring accident and incident trends to identify risks and implement preventative measures.
  • Develop and execute strategies to minimise operational risks and excessive costs associated with fleet usage.
  • Guarantee that vehicles are consistently clean, correctly branded, and compliant with traffic regulations and safety standards.

Performance Measurement

  • Compile detailed weekly and monthly reports to track account performance against agreed KPIs.
  • Analyse reports submitted by staff to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas requiring corrective action.
  • Present account performance results to both internal management and external clients, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Apply consistent standards across all accounts to maintain service excellence and operational consistency.

Continuous Improvement

  • Redesign and remodel client distribution patterns to optimise efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service delivery.
  • Conduct internal studies and evaluations to identify opportunities for operational improvement within accounts.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, embedding best practices across all processes and encouraging innovation.

General Responsibilities

  • Support business growth by identifying opportunities within existing accounts and securing additional client spend.
  • Contribute to marketing initiatives and assist in securing new business opportunities for the division.
  • Maintain professional client engagement through workshops, training sessions, and relationship-building activities.
  • Ensure high standards of housekeeping and operational discipline are consistently upheld across all accounts.
  • Gather, analyse, and act upon client feedback to refine and improve service offerings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in Business Management, Supply Chain or Logistics.
  • 5+ years’ experience in logistics or similar environment with three out of the five in a managerial role.
  • Proven experience managing client accounts.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency in ERP/ order management systems (Embrace)
